Arthur Devis specialized in painting fashionable 18th-century conversation pieces, while his half-brother Anthony Devis concentrated on topographical painting. Among the former's pupils were his sons Thomas Anthony Devis, his first son to survive infancy, and Arthur William Devis, his 19th child.
