View of the Merwede before Dordrecht

c. 1660
Oil on panel, 55 x 72 cm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

On this view of Merwede, the tower of the Grote Kerk and several windmills on the ramparts can be seen. Close to the shore in the foreground, fishermen haul in their nets, and all kinds of small rowing boats and sailing ships sail on the water.

Jeronymus van Diest (II), a follower of Jan van Goyen, painted this panel in the manner of van Goyen, to whom it was formerly attributed.
