Although Darius, king of Persia, fled after the battle of Issus, his mother wife and two daughters were captured by Alexander the Great who is noted for having treated them honourably and kindly. The scene is Alexander's tent on the battlefield. The mother, Sisygambis, kneels before the conqueror who put out a hand to help her rise.
