As a group of figures, the depiction of the sacrifice of Isaac is an exception amongst the sculptures on the Campanile. It presents the dramatic moment when Abraham was prepared to obey God's command, issued as a test, to kill his own son. The salvation of Isaac is indicated by Donatello in the rotation of Abraham's head as he turns away from the actual process of sacrifice.
