DONATELLO
(b. ca. 1386, Firenze, d. 1466, Firenze)

Reliquary Bust of St Rossore (detail)

1425-27
Guilded bronze
Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, Pisa

The intimism and clearly defined features of the saint's face, with its knitted eyebrows, have led some scholars to assume that this is Donatello's self-portrait. But even regarding the work as a reliquary bust, this became the prototype of Renaissance portrait busts.
