This statue was executed for the High Altar of the Basilica.
At the Altare del Santo we once again encounter a bronze figure of St Louis of Toulouse in Donatello's work. Once again, Donatello created the image of a still very young man, whose face on this occasion is however very much less expressive. Beneath the clothing the saint's arms appear rather disproportionately large, and the gestures of his hands appear almost clumsy.
