DONATELLO
(b. ca. 1386, Firenze, d. 1466, Firenze)

Miracle of the New-born Child (detail)

1447-50
Bronze
Basilica di Sant'Antonio, Padua

The individual panels of the life of St Anthony are designed as regular masses of people. Extremely rich in detail, narrative, and otherwise, they are filled with a multitude of figures that could scarcely be surpassed. Donatello appears to have complied with the northern Italian preference for almost painterly compositions filled with many figures.
