DONATELLO
(b. ca. 1386, Firenze, d. 1466, Firenze)

Madonna and Child

c. 1440
Polychrome terracotta, 102 x 74 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

This relief is attributed to Donatello or his immediate circle, with a disputed dating. The Madonna and Child are both looking in the same direction with concentration, even effort. The absence of the visual contact between the mother and child does not, however, in any way affect the intimacy of the scene, which is communicated in the gentle way Mary is embracing her child. The reproduction of the gilded and colourful materials is also exceptional.
