DONATELLO
(b. ca. 1386, Firenze, d. 1466, Firenze)

Resurrection

1460-65
Bronze
San Lorenzo, Florence

This relief is on the Resurrection Pulpit. Donatello's interpretation of the resurrection of Christ is very unusual and it is not only in the structuring of the architectural backdrop that it departs from comparable presentations of the theme. Despite the importance of the event to the salvation of man, the figure of the Saviour is permeated by melancholy and testifies to the torments he has suffered rather than the triumph over death.
