Personification of Justice

1701-11
Fresco
Palazzo Repeta, Vicenza

To the sides of the ceiling in the grand staircase, four large, faux Palladian windows, half-hidden by groupings of clouds, hold two theologian virtues - Hope and Charity - and two cardinal virtues - Justice and Fortitude - all accompanied by their respective attributes. Hope, Charity and Justice are drenched in light, whereas Fortitude is in shadow. Justice is shown with the peacock of Pride, which falls, pierced by an arrow.
