The Woman of Canaan at the Feet of Christ

1784
Oil on canvas, 114 x 146 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

Drouais was Jacques-Louis David's favourite pupil, who had won the Prix de Rome in 1784 with the sensationally successful painting The Woman of Canaan at the Feet of Christ. This was the first time that a pupil of David had won this important prize, and it signaled the blossoming of a true Davidian school. At this time David had perhaps as many as forty students, and a great number of these had come to him from the studios of established masters.
