DUQUESNOY, François
(b. 1597, Bruxelles, d. 1643, Livorno)

Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy

1635
Marble
Galleria Sabauda, Turin

During the first half of the 1630s François Duquesnoy was particularly active as a sculptor of portrait busts, though he produced works in this genre throughout his career. In the field of portrait sculpture Duquesnoy's achievements can be compared to those of Bernini. Like Bernini he tries to suggest in marble the texture and surface structure of features and clothing. Yet his work is more controlled and more stylised, as can be seen from examples such as the bust of Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy.
