St Susanna

1630-33
Marble
Santa Maria di Loreto, Rome

The Flemish master was active in Italy and his sculptures show the influence of ancient Roman sculptures.

A series of four sculptures representing virgin martyrs was places in the church of Santa Maria di Loreto in Rome. The one of St Susanna was made by Duquesnoy. The gracious pose, the retiring and modestly averted gaze, and the polished surface of this marble statue elicited great admiration. Therefore plaster casts and bronze copies were already made in the seventeenth century.
