DÜRER, Albrecht
(b. 1471, Nürnberg, d. 1528, Nürnberg)

Man of Sorrows, Seated

1515
Etching, first state of three, 112 x 66 mm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Early impressions of this etching are of the greatest rarity and of such purity that they look like a pen drawing. This is quite in contrast with the still somewhat laborious technique, reminiscent of burin work, of The Desperate Man. Dürer here exploits more fully the virtues of this medium. It is for these reasons that the Man of Sorrows is probably Dürer's second experimental etching, still without his monogram.

This is Dürer's earliest etched plate.
