According to the inscription on the painting, the child in this lifesize, full-length portrait was two years old at the time it was made. Although dressed in a frock, the child is a boy. All small children wore similar clothing in seventeenth-century Holland, with only a few minor details to distinguish between the sexes. In this case the clues to the child's sex are the sash with the medallion he wears diagonally across his chest, his hairstyle, the shape of his collar and his six-part cap.
