FEUCHTMAYER, Joseph Anton
(b. 1696, Wessobrun, d. 1770, Wessobrun)

Honey-licking putto

1746-53
Stucco
Unsere Liebe Frau, Birnau

This sculptor, stucco decorator, and engraver spent almost the whole of his life at Minnenhausen, working alternately at Salem abbey and Birnau church, the former Cistercian pilgrimage church which was affiliated with the abbey. In this church by Peter Thumb, a gem of Swabian religious Baroque, Feuchtmayer carried out an interior decoration of rare quality. The soft graduation of forms and colours is remarkable.
