Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer, like Johann Josef Christian, another sculptor in Upper Swabia in the mid-eighteenth century, used plaster as his main sculptural medium. He is considered one of the principal masters of southern German Rococo. His life-size figures in the pilgrimage church at Birnau are notable for their intense physical agitation, which is intended to suggest inner spiritual torment. Their symbolic representation was evidently more important to the artist than their specific anatomical attributes.
