FRAGONARD, Jean-Honoré
(b. 1732, Grasse, d. 1806, Paris)

Landscape with a Youth by a Pond

1766-70
Oil on canvas, 24 x 33 cm
Private collection

Although Jean Honoré Fragonard is famous as a painter of amorous genre subjects and mythological scenes, the landscape was equally significant in his oeuvre. Having developed the practice of drawing directly from nature in Italy, it is likely that Fragonard would have based the present painting, executed after his return to Paris, on a drawing made en plein air.
