FRAGONARD, Jean-Honoré
(b. 1732, Grasse, d. 1806, Paris)

The Party Cook

c. 1775
Red chalk, 335 x 246 mm
Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne

This kitchen scene, an everyday subject, seems to be lit up by the elegant clarity of the line. Fragonard's drawing style has the spirit of Rococo and yet there is also an element of Roman classicism. The clarity of the hatching is remarkable.
