FRANCESCO DAL PRATO
(b. 1512, Caravaggio, d. 1562, Firenze)

Medal of Alessandro de' Medici

1535-36
Bronze, cast, diameter 6 cm
British Museum, London

The bust on obverse of this medal is the same as that on the earlier medal by Francesco del Prato, only the reverse is different. On the reverse, Perseus, dressed in ancient armour and striding over turbulent waves, holds a shield and the head of the Medusa in one hand and an unsheathed sword in the other.
