San Francesco della Vigna, Venice

The church San Francesco della Vigna was designed in Renaissance style by Jacopo Sansovino. The façade of the church was ultimately commissioned in 1562 from Andrea Palladio by Cardinal Giovanni Grimani, one of the most active patrons of classical architecture and Mannerist painting in Venice. This church housed the Grimani family chapel which the cardinal transformed into a small but elegant showcase of Mannerist decorative art. The ceiling and the walls were frescoed by Battista Franco; the altarpiece Adoration of the Magi is a fine work by Federico Zuccaro.
