FRIES, Ernst
(b. 1801, Heidelberg, d. 1833, Karlsruhe)

From the Park of the Villa Chigi in Ariccia

1824
Watercolour on pencil, 388 x 535 mm
Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe

Ernst Fries sought a realistic recreation of the phenomenon of light and absorbed the latest developments from painting into his watercolours. This picture with its subtly graded tones in attractive colours shows a sunlit forest. Fries combined precision - in his drawing of the half-ruined staircase and the tree roots - with a rich application of wash which only hinted at detail, and which united the foreground and foliage.
