GAUGUIN, Paul

Words of Devil (Eve)

c. 1892
Pastel, 77 x 36 cm
Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basel

This work was exhibited in Paris in 1894. The "animal" beauty of the female figure was considered a provocation by the critics. The figure of the devil can be recognised in several other paintings by Gauguin.
