GAUGUIN, Paul
(b. 1848, Paris, d. 1903, Atuona, Hiva Oa, French Polynesia)

There Is the Temple (Parahi Te Marae)

1892
Oil on canvas, 68 x 91 cm
Museum of Art, Philadelphia

Gauguin never actually saw the enormous, monstrous idol which he painted in the background of this painting (and in many other Tahitian scenes). He drew them from small and middle-sized effigies.
