This subject (often called the Toilet of Venus) was much sought-after, having been established in Venice around 1500, and treated by Titian, Rubens, Velázquez and Guercino. Gennari himself painted this theme more than once. The non-idealized features of Gennari's Venus may have been those of the mistress or wife of the patron. | |
