GENTILESCHI, Orazio
(b. 1563, Pisa, d. 1639, London)

Way to Calvary

1605-07
Oil on canvas, 139 x 173 cm
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

Gentileschi was almost forty years old when he joined the followers of Caravaggio. For a brief time around 1602, the two artists were friendly, exchanging studio props and a brown Capuchin habit to depict in their paintings of St Francis. This Way to Calvary is one of the most impressive examples of Gentileschi's new style in the middle of the first decade of the seventeenth century.
