GÉRARD, Marguerite
(b. 1761, Grasse, d. 1837, Paris)

A Young Sketcher

1821
Oil on canvas, 62 x 51 cm
Private collection

Aside from her small portraits, which earned her recognition, Marguerite Gérard produced numerous genre scenes in which she depicted everyday and domestic life. The present painting is an example: she depicts the intimacy of a middle-class family in the early 19th century in their private domestic setting.
