The fresco of the Annunciation in the cloister next to the Collegiata in San Gimignano, dated 1482, was considered by earlier scholars to be the work of Domenico Ghirlandaio, but then it came to be attributed to Sebastiano Mainardi. We now know that Mainardi was a mere fourteen years old in 1482, so that Annunciation, which is similar in style to the wall paintings in the Chapel of St Fina, has been given back to Ghirlandaio.
