Coronation of the Virgin1486-90Fresco Cappella Tornabuoni, Santa Maria Novella, Florence
|
The Coronation of the Virgin in the lunette of the window wall is divided into three levels, and in the middle level especially, where the patriarchs sit enthroned on clouds, it is an important precursor of Raphael's Disputa in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. There is no direct earlier precedent for this presentation of the heavenly hierarchies in different spatial spheres. Ghirlandaio borrowed in his composition from Filippo Lippi's Coronation of the Virgin in Spoleto. (He also borrowed from Spoleto for the lunettes of the side walls.) Ghirlandaio's Coronation of the Virgin has been badly damaged owing to cracks in the added masonry.
