Bartolomeo Giolfino was born into a family of sculptors active in Verona during the 15th and 16th centuries. This signed and dated polyptych is a rare example of a work that combines painting and sculpture by the same artist. Although it was usual for painter and sculptor to divide their task, Bartolomeo Giolfino carved the figures and laid on the rich colours.
