Panel paintings: Paintings of the Crucifix
by GIOTTO

Following a Byzantine tradition, Giotto painted three Crucifixes on shaped panels, the earliest - that in the Santa Maria Novella in Florence - became a prototype for contemporary and later artists. Although the attribution of the Crucifixes in Rimini and Padua is debated the majority of the experts attribute them to Giotto with possible contribution by assistants.
