St Barnabas

1395-96
Marble
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence

The development in which the body becomes more independent of its draperies is apparent in the monumental statue in contrapposto pose that was convincingly identified as the statue of St Barnabas made by Giovanni d'Ambrogio for the first façade of the Duomo.

The picture shows the statue of St Barnabas flanked by two angels by Pietro di Giovanni Tedesco. The angel at right is a copy of the original in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
