The monument to Robert of Anjou (died 1343) is the competent work of the Florentine brothers Giovanni and Paccio da Firenze. Its interest lies mainly in its content; for it is a summing-up of much Italian sepulchral design during the previous half-century. Particular elements to be noted are the sarcophagus with the dead man surrounded by his relatives (almost all of them dead by 1343); the effigy in an enclosed chamber backed by figures; the dead man being presented to the Virgin; and the dead King seated in state.
