The Prophet Isaiah1456-66Fresco San Francesco, Arezzo | |
Giovanni di Piamonte was the main assistant to Piero della Francesca when he and his workshop painted the fresco cycle of the Legend of the True Cross in the Cappella Maggiore of the church San Francesco, Arezzo. In the San Francesco in Arezzo, he painted the Prophet Isaiah above the scene of the Torture of the Jew by Piero della Francesca, as well as St Augustine and St Ambrose on the intrado (the inner surface of the arch). Furthermore, the execution of two scenes of the Legend of the True Cross (the Burial of the Holy Wood, and the Torture of the Jew) may be attributed to him. These scenes are based on the cartoons which are definitely by Piero. |
