God the Father

1420-25
Tempera on panel, gold ground, 48 x 47 cm
Private collection

The painting represents God the Father sending forth the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, surrounded by four seraphim. It is a fragment of a pinnacle that would once have formed the apex of the central panel of an altarpiece. The gilt additions with highly decorative punch work, lending the panel its new quadrangular format, were produced in Rome in the early 19th century.
