At Cardinal Georges I d'Amboise's château at Gaillon the influence of Italian artists was felt initially through imported works of art. The sculpted decor of the upper chapel of the château was executed under the direction of the Florentine Antonio Giusti. The ensemble featured twelve statues of Christ and the Apostles, only two of which remain in place.
The sensual mouth and knowing, ironic expression of St Peter are typically Florentine.
