GOGH, Vincent van
(b. 1853, Groot Zundert, d. 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise)

Terrace of a Café on Montmartre (La Guinguette) in Montmartre

October 1886, Paris
Oil on canvas, 50 x 65 cm
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

Catalogue numbers: F 238, JH 1178.

The picture shows the tavern La Guingette, one of the typical meeting places in Montmartre, which at that time was more like a village. However, the hustle and bustle of Sundays in Montmartre was of no interest to van Gogh, only the seats under the pergola are occupied in the tavern. The brushwork is already very free, released from its traditional task of delineating the image. The colours, however, are confined to the earthy, dark tones that are reminiscent of vanGogh's early work.
