The Japanese influence, already present in Whistler and Manet and drawn upon by Monet in the 1880s for its compositional boldness, was absorbed in a blatant fashion van Gogh and Gauguin. Examples are the wall covered in ukiyo-e prints against which van Gogh posed Père Tanguy and the circular shape that Gauguin introduced into La Belle Angèle, which can be found in the work of Hokusai and Hiroshige.
