Three White Cottages in Saintes-MariesJune 1888, ArlesOil on canvas, 34 x 42 cm Kunsthaus, Zurich | |
Catalogue numbers: F 419, JH 1465. At the end of May 1888 van Gogh took a trip to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a fishing village on the Mediterranean coast. "Old thatched roofs" had always been favourite subject for van Gogh, thus, in addition to the Mediterranean and the medieval fortified church, what cast a spell over him during his one-week stay at Saintes-Maries were the thatched cottages. |
