Catalogue numbers: F 441a, JH 1640. Marcelle Roulin (born on July 31, 1888) was the daughter of Joseph Étienne Roulin, the postman of Arles railway station. The postman became friends with van Gogh and he agreed to sit for two portraits. From the end of November 1888 van Gogh portrayed Marcelle, her two brothers Camille and Armand, and the mother as well. Van Gogh painted the baby Marcelle's portrait in three copies, he presented one to the Roulin family, the other he gave to Theo and his wife Jo. There are only slight alterations between the three versions. | |
