Soon after Gauguin's departure, van Gogh started painting small series of pictures in which a single subject gives rise to various stylistic speculations. The five versions of La Berceuse include sometimes tiny variations in colour or in the arrangement of the background. He got into the habit of doing one or more repetitions based on an initial picture painted from the life.
