GOGH, Vincent van
(b. 1853, Groot Zundert, d. 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise)

Prisoners Exercising (after Doré)

February 1890, Saint-Rémy
Oil on canvas, 80 x 64 cm
Pushkin Museum, Moscow

Catalogue numbers: F 669, JH 1885.

This painting was executed after an engraving by Gustave Doré.

In his copies, van Gogh did not make any subjects his own, he merely borrowed them. Doré's print doubtless underlined his own sense of confinement, but it was only when he added the brooding blue to the picture that he truly expressed his own situation.
