Marguerite Gachet in the Garden

June 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise
Oil on canvas, 46 x 56 cm
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

Catalogue numbers: F 756, JH 2005.

Van Gogh painted the elder daughter of Paul Gachet, Marguerite, in her garden. The blond young woman, looking like the ethereal figure of an angel, is standing in her white gown in the middle of a magnificent profusion of flowers in full bloom, a view that is closed in to the rear by the cypresses that van Gogh loved and painted again and again.
