Catalogue numbers: F 1239, JH 464. Van Gogh was familiar with the tradition in Dutch art to depict country lanes and tree-lined roads. He had studied famous examples, such as Hobbema's The Alley at Middelharnis, in the National Gallery in London during his stay there in the 1870s. | |
