The girl - whose identity has not yet been convincingly established - is represented with the "sphaera armillaris", an instrument showing the trajectory of the planets. As for her identity, several names were proposed Jacoba (Jacqueline de Bourgogne, 1523-1556), daughter of Adolf of Burgundy, Isabella of Portugal (1503-1539), wife of Emperor Charles V, and recently Dorothea of Denmark, daughter of Christian II of Denmark and Isabella of Austria. Gossart painted the three children of Christian II, including Dorothea, in a triple portrait now in the Royal Collection, Windsor. Dorothea in the triple portrait bears a marked resemblance to the sitter of the present portrait, who may well be the same child, five years older.
