GRECO, El
(b. 1541, Candia, d. 1614, Toledo)

The Burial of the Count of Orgaz (detail)

1586-88
Oil on canvas
Santo Tomé, Toledo

The portrait-like depictions can be taken as a confirmation of the traditional claim that El Greco immortalized other fellow-citizens of Toledo in the figures of the mourners. Also, it is generally agreed that the boy at the front edge of the picture represents the artist's eight-year-old son, because El Greco signed the painting on the boy's handkerchief with the date 1587, the year Jorge Manuel was born.
