The Annunciation (detail)

1597-1600
Oil on canvas
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid

The picture shows the lower scene of the painting. The Archangel Gabriel, his hands crossed over his breast, is shown adoring the Virgin, who looks up expectantly from her lectern. The flaming rose bush signifies that Mary remained a virgin even after conception and refers to God's appearance to Moses in the form of a burning bush that was not consumed by the flames that engulfed it.
