This is one of at least twenty portraits of the commander of Venice's land troops, documented as having been painted by Giovanni Antonio Guardi, for many years his preferred artist Inspired by the courtly tradition of European portrait painting, this portrait is notable for its chromatic quality, the sudden flashes of light illuminating the battle scene in the background, and for the detailed and incisive portrayal of the facial features.
