In Spain, it was Carlos de Haes who played the key role in disseminating plein-air art and its techniques. He taught landscape art at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid from 1857. There his small-format work in the Barbizon manner presented nature studies free of Romantic effects. He exerted great influence on Spanish landscape art for more than thirty years.
