Portrait of a Man

1650-52
Oil on canvas, 108 x 80 cm
Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna

This portrait of an unidentified man is a typical example of Frans Hals's late portraits. After the deaths of Rubens and van Dyck, Frans Hals became the most important portraitist in the Netherlands.

The painting belonged to the collection of the Rothshild family in Vienna from 1898 to 1938 when the German requisitioned it. After World War II it was in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna until 1998 when the Austrian government restituted the painting to the Rothshilds who later auctioned it. Since 2003 the painting is in the collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein.
